Winter Activities

In the Northern Hemisphere, WINTER begins in mid-December and ends in mid-March. During this season the days grow shorter, and the nights grow longer. The southern part of the United States has milder winters characterized by warmer weather and rain instead of snow. Cold weather abounds in the northern states during the winter months.

The cold weather causes many changes in the environment. Water freezes and forms ice, snow, sleet and icicles. Most plants and animals become dormant and rest. The only plants that grow and remain green are called evergreens. People's life styles also change. They protect themselves from the cold and enjoy a variety of indoor activities and winter sports.
